NEWARK, N.J., February 18, 2011 – Commercial District Services (CDS), the Ironbound Business Improvement District’s (IBID) new streetscape cleaning contractor, has quickly made a positive impression on local business owners and residents. The “Clean Team” started on January 2nd, and has already dealt effectively with the difficulties caused by this winter’s record-setting snowfall. "CDS has the capacity to expand our cleaning efforts to include supplemental sidewalk power washing, graffiti removal, poster removal, monitoring and reporting of illegal dumping, some landscaping, and other cleanup and maintenance needs," said Seth A. Grossman, Executive Director of the IBID.
Manny Lopes, longtime owner of Lopes & Sons Hardware on Ferry Street, said the CDS employees are friendly and enthusiastic about their work. “I think they are doing a great job of keeping the district clean, despite the difficulties including this winter’s record snowfall,” Lopes added.
“We were excited to get started, and prepared to deal with the challenges of keeping a busy area like the Ironbound District clean,” noted Chris Bernardo, a CDS principal who is personally supervising the effort. “The experience we have gained working in other commercial districts and public spaces has helped us learn what equipment and manpower is necessary to get the job done and we look forward to making a positive impact.”
"The Clean Team" consists of four ambassadors, Mark Blue, Carlos Saravia, Victor Colon and Rashid Khyree, under the direction of Field Supervisor Rich Unis and Bernardo. The crew is equipped with litter buckets, brooms and dustpans, tools for removing posters from public amenities and shovels for clearing snow from crosswalks and sewer drains. In addition, the CDS crew is on the lookout for issues impacting the district’s quality of life. Service is provided six days per week, from 6:00 am until 2:00 pm, Monday through Friday and 8:00 am till 12:00 pm on Sundays.
Grossman believes the supplemental cleaning services are of tremendous importance, reinforcing perceptions of the Ironbound as a welcoming place for the people who live and work in the district, and the thousands of people who visit the Ironbound as part of their experience at the Prudential Center, NJPAC, Red Bull Arena or Newark Liberty International Airport, or simply to enjoy the district’s world-class dining, shopping and entertainment.
“While the City is responsible for the collection of garbage and recycling, primary cleaning of the Ironbound District’s streets and sidewalks, and removing snow during the winter months, the IBID’s business and commercial property owners are committed to working collaboratively to address these quality of life issues and keep the Ironbound as one of Newark’s and the region’s leading destinations,” he concluded.
